Executive Summary
The UK's Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) today announced the approval of two licences to conduct research using human-animal cytoplasmic hybrid embryos. Subject to a "series of detailed conditions in each case", Kings College London and Newcastle University will be able to perform the research for a period of one year. The applications were discussed at HFEA licence committee meetings on November 28 2007 and January 9 2008; minutes of the meetings are available from the HFEA (www.hfea.gov.uk).
