Executive Summary
Accuray has received 510(k) clearance from the US FDA for its dose calculation software for radiotherapy. The technology - called the Monte Carlo Dose calculation algorithm - is now available for sale worldwide, reported the company. Traditional dose calculation methods assume all photons take a single path and therefore use a single calculation to represent the dose delivered by all photons. The Monte Carlo method, however, takes into account interactions of each individual photon when considering an appropriate dose. The Sunnyvale, California firm claims it will be the first company to market the technology. The product was launched at the 9th Biennial European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (ESTRO) meeting in Barcelona, Spain, during September 8-13.
