Executive Summary
Bahrain claims to have become only the second country in the world to employ electromyography as a non-surgical technique for the diagnosis of lower back and neck pain. Ghazi Sarhan, president of the Bahrain physical therapy association, who has used the technique to research back pain since May 2003, claims a success rate of 80-85% to date with the procedure. An electromyogram (EMG) measures the electrical activity of a muscle and thereby evaluates signs of blockage or slowing down of responses to nerve stimulation. It can additionally assess whether a muscle disorder is due to the muscle itself or is caused by a disorder of the nervous system.
