Executive Summary
"Enormous improvement" could be made in the expediting of drafting European standards. That is the conclusion of a European Commission Communication on standardisation. To resource measures needed to speed progress, the Commission has proposed a "broader basis" for financing the European Standardisation Committee and the European Electrotechnical Standardisation Committee, CEN and CENELEC. Some consider this will mean that there will be a need for private funding. It has also said that there should be more extensive use of standards in EU legislation, including in the services sector, and continues to support the development of international standards and their adoption in the European system.
