Executive Summary
The US FDA has given Medical Carbon Research Institute (MCRI) the go-ahead to market its On-X mitral prosthetic heart valve. The mechanical valve is made from the Austin, Texas firm's On-X pyrolytic carbon and comprises a bileaflet design with features that include: a near natural length; a haemodynamic curved inlet; full opening leaflets and an optimum orifice size, says MCRI. The company gained US approval for an aortic mechanical heart valve last year (see Clinica No 962, p 20).
