Executive Summary
Researchers from the US company, Sugen, have discovered a new gene linked to colon cancer. The gene, which they named Aurora2, was found to be overexpressed in more than 50% of primary colon cancer cases. In normal cells, Aurora2, which appears to play a role in making sure that each new cell receives the correct number of chromosomes, is expressed at low levels. In a study of 25 human tumour cell lines, published in the journal of the European Molecular Biology Organisation, the researchers found that the gene was overexpressed in 96% of the cases.
