Executive Summary

Dr Didzis Gavars, a doctor by education and co-owner of the private company E. Gulbja Laboratorija, has been appointed Latvia's new health minister. His company specialises in biochemical, microbiological, chemical and other tests of human and animal specimens for diagnostics and health evaluation. Dr Gavars succeeds the acting health minister Linda Murniece. Ms Murniece ran the office after the previous health minister Baiba Rozentale resigned when her people's party withdrew from the government in March. Janis Reirs, parliamentary secretary at the health ministry, and Rinalds Mucins, state secretary at the health ministry, were appointed in May.
