Recent shortages in the UK have highlighted the perennial problem of producing and distributing influenza vaccine that is effective for each year’s predominant strain(s) of the virus. Considerable effort is involved at international, national and local level before the ‘flu season even starts to identify the strain that will be circulating and produce the required amounts of vaccine.
