Genentech eye implant to improve delivery of Lucentis may improve sales, too

Executive Summary
Genentech is developing an intraocular implant for the delivery of its age-related macular degeneration (AMD) drug Lucentis (ranibizumab) over a longer period, thereby reducing the dosing frequency. Although Genentech has not discussed the strategy behind the move, it is possible that migrating patients onto the device-delivered form of Lucentis could not only be a useful part of life-cycle management for the drug, but might also encourage patients to seek Lucentis, rather than the similar but much cheaper vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitor, Avastin, another Genentech product.
