To safeguard and improve the US drug and food supply chain, the FDA needs to work more closely with its "technologically advanced" counterparts in the European Union and other developed nations, such as Canada, Japan and New Zealand, to plan a regulatory system for mutual recognition of one another's inspections, with the goal of eliminating wasteful, duplicative efforts, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) urged in a new report.
