Although overall US spending on prescription drugs rose only 2.7% in 2011, the lowest percentage seen in more than a decade, spending on specialty drugs jumped 17.1% according to a report from Express Scripts, a major pharmacy benefits manager based in St Louis, Missouri. The huge leap in specialty spending in 2011 came on top of an even larger increase of 19.6% the year before.
