With the US stuck in continuing resolution hell and no dollars allocated from the $80 million President Barack Obama sought last year in his fiscal year 2013 budget request for programs to better prepare science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) teachers, the White House eagerly welcomed the $22.5 million gift on 18 March from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) to help US research universities in their STEM training efforts.
