WMA appoints Canadian president

Executive Summary

Dr Dana Hanson has been elected president of the World Medical Associationfor 2009-10, the first Canadian to be appointed in over 35 years. Dr Hanson will use his presidency to focus on patient and physician advocacy, health and the environment. The position will become effective in a years' time, when Dr Hanson will take over from Dr Yoram Blachar, president of the Israel Medical Association, who holds the position for 2008-09. The last Canadian to be elected president was Dr Arthur Peart, secretary general of the Canadian Medical Association, in 1971.
