Eisai Sees Generics Production In India Way To Make Affordable Drugs (Japan)

An Eisai executive says the Japanese company is turning to India for expanded production of active pharmaceutical ingredients, in part because it cannot make drugs in Japan cheaply enough to make them affordable in poor countries. Takafumi Asano, an Esai vice president, also said the company expects to take advantage of production costs in India to make its own generics at a fraction of the price of its branded drugs. Asano added, during an interview along with Deputy President Soichi Matsuno, that the company would not be able to do so if it relied solely on its Kashima plant in Japan.
