Study: Protein Mutation Protects Indian HIV Patients From AIDS Dementia

A research team has determined India has a relatively low incidence of AIDS-induced dementia because of a mutation that occurs in Indian patients. Four percent of Indians infected with HIV get AIDS-induced dementia, while 45 percent of HIV patients in the West get the dementia, the study determined. Researchers ascribed the difference to Tat, a neuro-toxic protein in the AIDS virus that mutates naturally.
