Executive Summary
Kowa, a Japanese drug maker, plans to drop wholesalers and market all of its over-the-counter drugs directly to drugstores beginning in April. The firm markets about 110 drugs to 40,000 drugstores and pharmacies in Japan through wholesalers. About 30 of the drugs are made by a subsidiary it bought in 2005. Still, the company figures that only three percent of its sales will be from OTC drugs. Kowa plans to double the number of its sales representatives to about 360 to accommodate the change.
