A scare in Australia over an implanted medical wire has added to original estimates 200 children might be affected. The wire in question is a peripheral inserted central catheter line to administer chemotherapy drugs and antibiotics. More than 330 Australian families have contacted a hotline established after it was discovered some of the surgical wires have lodged close to the hearts of children. The wires at issue, made by Arrow International, a U.S-based company, have been banned from use in Australia pending an investigation of the cases centered in Queensland hospitals where the PICs have been used for the past year.
