Philippines Readies Regulations, Rules For Cheaper Drugs

Executive Summary

New regulations are set to go into effect in mid-November in the Philippines aimed at reducing the cost of certain drugs. The regulations and rules implement the Universally Accessible Cheaper and Quality Medicines Act of 2008 and provide for importing generic drugs and setting maximum prices at the retail level where stores also will be required to carry both generics and branded drugs. The law, enacted in July, is to take effect 15 days after rules and regulations were published, set for Nov. 4.
