Executive Summary
The 2008 year about to end was a mixed bag for India's pharmaceutical industry, beginning with good news the excise duty on pharma products would be cut in half. Of greatest interest during the year was Ranbaxy Laboratories, which began the year attempting to obtain Orchid Pharmaceuticals and ended the year being acquired itself. Sun Pharmaceuticals was not as lucky, failing in its attempt to take over Israel's Taro Pharmaceuticals and failing again when it attempted to force the acquisition in court by the end of the year. The issue is still pending. (Click here for more
