Japan's Shimadzu To Develop New Mass Spectroscope

Executive Summary

Nobel laureate in chemistry and Shimadzu Mass Spectrometry Research Institute Director Koichi Tanaka announced the company will develop a compact protein mass spectroscope. Tanaka also announced that a joint research project with Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center in the U.S. to find proteins related to cancer's early diagnosis will begin this autumn. In the research, Tanaka will utilize the mass spectroscope and assess its potential towards commercialization. According to Tanaka, the new equipment will be smaller, have a higher sensitivity and be able to analyze proteins larger in mass compared to current spectroscopes.
