Executive Summary
Several Japanese drug makers and Japan's National Institute of Health Sciences have developed a new technique for preserving cultured cells for drug compatibility evaluation. Researchers from Astellas Pharma, Chugai Pharmaceutical, Kyowa Hakko Kogyo, Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma, Nippon Shinyaku and Sanofi-Aventis KK joined the institute in the development. The technique they came up with extends the effective life of enzymes used by cells to metabolize drugs, eliminating the need to prepare and maintain new cell cultures for drug development efforts.
