India Works On Public-Private Plans To Get Drugs To Poor

Executive Summary

The Indian government plans to set up its own drug stores and even make drugs in some cases to make medicines more affordable in the poorer sections of the country. Part of the plan calls for partnerships with the private sector to produce generic copies of essential medicines. Other parts of the plan call for other public-private partnerships to be established to sell generics at half the price of the branded drugs they represent. Government representatives are discussing the plan with pharmacy associations and makers of generic drugs.
