Executive Summary
The State Environmental Protection Administration of China has published the discharge standards of pollutants for the pharmaceutical industry. Coming into force on August 1, the new standards cover all six subcategories of the industry, including extraction products, TCM, biopharmaceuticals, mixing/compounding formulations, fermentation products and chemical synthesis products. According to the content details, the main indices are stricter than those of the U.S., with the discharge levels of chemical oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand and total cyanide close to the most rigorous EU standards. China will give differential treatment to new and old enterprises; the latter may enjoy a two-year transition period while new firms will need to implement the standards from the start.
