Australia Group Urges Early-Warning System For Problem Drugs

This article was originally published in PharmAsia News

Executive Summary

The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care is calling for a federal law to require agencies to cross-check for possible lethal side effects of new drugs. The group said the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme and Medicare hold huge amounts of information on illnesses and deaths attributed to medication problems. The health and safety commission also said high-risk groups such as diabetics would benefit the most from advance knowledge of adverse events if patient details were linked to problem medications.
