Executive Summary
Australian researchers report that a nasal enzyme has a role in causing damage during a heart attack. Working at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Free Radical Chemistry and Biotechnology, the scientists said the acid-containing enzyme is automatically dumped onto bacteria after white cells detect their presence. The enzyme in turn produces an acidic bleach, also used as a common way to get rid of bacteria. Under inflammatory conditions such as heart attack, however, the enzyme is dumped in the wrong place. Scientists also have identified antioxidant nitroxides effective in preventing the enzyme from producing its acid. (Click here for more
