Japanese generic drug maker Nichi-Iko May 11 signed an agreement with Mitani Sangyo to establish a ¥300 million joint venture to produce active pharmaceutical ingredients for generic drugs. The new company, Active Pharma, is based in Tokyo and will provide APIs for Nichi-Iko, which is seeing an expanded market for its generic drugs. The new company will acquire Mitani's wholly owned API maker Sagami Chemicals. Known for making ingredients for hyperlipidemia drugs, Sagami's sales were ¥2.2 billion in fiscal year 2008.
