Executive Summary
Potential exposure to food products containing melamine-contaminated milk or milk powder does not raise concerns for the health of adults, however children with high level consumption of such products could exceed the tolerable daily intake (TDI) established for the substance, says the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). In its urgent scientific opinion on health risks related to the presence of melamine in composite foods containing milk products, the authority was following the request of the European Commission, which had expressed concern about potential health problems stemming from the discovery of large quantities of melamine in infant milk and other milk products in China.
