European Commission wants hazardous substances law to cover devices

Executive Summary
The European Commission has proposed that medical devices and instruments used for monitoring and control generally be no longer exempt from the scope of the European directive on the restriction of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment1,2. It has also proposed priority assessment of four new substances, namely the phthalates DEHP, DBP and BBP, and the flame retardant HBCDD, with a view to possibly banning their use in the future.
