EU Council seeks to ease WEEE collection targets; RoHS publication imminent

This article was originally published in RAJ Devices

Executive Summary

In its first-reading position on the recast of the so-called WEEE Directive on waste electrical and electronic equipment, the EU's Council of Ministers has decided that member states should be given eight years after the legislation enters into force, or until as late as 2021, to reach collection targets of 65%1. This is a departure from the European Parliament's position adopted last month; that sought to ensure that 85% of WEEE was collected by 20162. As the scope of the legislation will include medical devices, the industry has been watching developments closely.
