Executive In China’s Melamine Scandal Appeals Life Sentence

The former head of China's Sanlu Group responsible for deadly melamine in powdered milk has filed a formal appeal of her life sentence. Tian Wenhua was chairwoman of Sanlu at the time of the contamination that caused several deaths of children and injured thousands of others. Other executives of the company received death sentences and still others shorter prison terms. Tian, who was found guilty of charges she authorized the sale of products knowing they contained fake or substandard elements, also was fined $3.6 million.
